If the player character decides to join the Institute they will be called to the reactor room to insert the beryllium agitator into the reactor, no turrets will be hostile and the room with be filled with scientists.
By doing this the Institute will be propelled into the future with enough power to sustain them indefinitely. This area is accessed from an underwater pipe due south of Ticonderoga , which leads into a small flooded underground room.
There is a terminal-locked security gate in the northeast corner, leading to a small area containing a steamer trunk with leveled loot. An old and rundown section of the Institute that appears to have been sealed off for many years.
The player will only travel through this area when progressing through the quest The Nuclear Option. It's inhabited by many hostile synths and four laser turrets , which can be deactivated using a terminal.
There are multiple conveyor belts and pieces of machinery that appear to have been used to assemble protectrons. On the main assembly floor, there's a prototype sentry bot which can be activated with the robotics terminal.
It will fight the synths that are on the assembly floor, but will also be hostile to the player. The exit is through a circular hatch in the back of the main assembly floor, which will lead to the Bioscience division.
A very small area is accessible only by an elevator in the main atrium. It contains a storage room and heavy construction equipment being used to expand the Institute's infrastructure.

Brian Virgil personal log You will be tasked with retrieving a scientist who has been living in Greygarden. You will arrive to find the Minutemen waiting outside to help him.
You can talk to their leader and try to resolve the situation without violence if you want. Do not order the Minutemen to attack if you want to stay allied with the Institute.
Whether you kill the Minutemen or not, you will find some Institute members inside. Wallace will be holed up in a room with a locked door.
You can try to convince him to give up and join the Institute or order him to be taken by force. Father will ask you to make a speech to the people, not just of the Institute, but of the whole Commonwealth.
You will first have to record your speech into a microphone Father has set up for you. Its your speech, so do what you choose.
You will then have to broadcast this message to the Commonwealth. You need to travel to Diamond City and find the radio station.
You will have to insert parts into the transmitter. You will find the parts in the station. There are three parts and three slots, but it does not tell you which goes where.
You will notice a lighting system, however. Each correct part will light up one green light. Its merely trial and error using the green lights to determine the correct piece and switching out the others until they are all in the correct slots.
You will then return to the Institute to find Father in the reactor room. Now that the beryllium agitator is in place and the speech is being transmitted to the Commonwealth, its time to start the generator.
Just open the door and activate it. You will then have to go to the conference room and host a meeting. Just address them as you wish.
Shaun will tell you that you need to end the Railroad. Not only are they opposed to the Institute, but you also need to prove that you are not loyal to the Railroad.
If not, just enter through the Old North Church. The main characters from the Railroad will be inside the HQ.
The Brotherhood of Steel. If you have already taken them out, then this quest will not be necessary. The Brotherhood are going to put up much more of a fight than the Railroad.
When you arrive, you are going to face heavy resistance at the airport. You will first need to destroy three generators which will be marked by waypoints.
One of them will only be accessible by using an elevator. You will then have to make your way to Liberty Prime. Climb the stairs to the back of his head.
A synth will arrive and begin working on Prime, and you will have to defend him. Once he is done, Prime will begin going through some dialogue and will then shoot lasers at the Prydwen.
You will be relayed to a safe distance, the Prydwen will fall, and the Brotherhood will be finished. Father, your son, has run out of time.
I am not entirely comfortable with it, but it seems the best course. A great distinction. The Institute endeavored to create synthetic organics.
The most logical starting point, of course, was human DNA. Plenty of that was available, of course, but it had all become corrupted.
In this Even in their attempts to shield themselves from the world above, members of the Institute had been exposed. Another source was necessary.
But then the Institute found me, after discovering records from Vault An infant, frozen in time, protected from the radiation-induced mutations that had crept into every other human cell in the Commonwealth.
I was exactly what they needed. And so it was my DNA that became the basis of the synthetic organics used to create every human-like synth you see today.
I am their Father. Through Science, we are family. The synths, me B Notes: Nothing new. Always the same. Have entered formal complaint with Directorate; these tests are not bringing in any valuable information.
The organics project was spun off decades ago. Why do we insist on continuing this? C Notes: Latest round of testing complete.
Results are all within expected parameters. Informed Dr. Zimmer directly, as he had ordered the tests personally.
He seemed annoyed with the results; unsure what he was looking for. He declined to specify why he wanted the tests run to begin with.
B Notes: I have officially assumed the lead role on the project after Dr. Syverson's passing. Latest round of subjects show results similar to previous test runs over last 5 years.
No statistical deviation noted. Synthetic organics continue to perform well; the necessity of further tests is unexplained. Over the years, we've learned a few tricks that help supplement our power budget.
When necessary, we can tap into select sources on the surface. We take only what we need, of course. Fortunately, Advanced Systems is always working on new solutions to generate more energy.
It's a good thing, too, because the demand is always increasing. You don't even want to know what a single use of the molecular de-materializer consumes.
This place might look shiny and new, but there's a lot of old technology in these walls. I lose sleep worrying about when the next blackout's going to hit.
Most of the superstructure down here was built later, by the people who survived the war. I guess each generation's been tinkering with the place, adding labs, making upgrades and so on.
There's some stuff I need to check on. See you around, yeah? I mean, even the older tech has held up for decades, some even for centuries.
It's pretty amazing, when you think about it. Our ancestors built things to last. Of course, that was before they blew everything up in the war.
Today, it has been repurposed, and once activated will provide the Institute with nearly limitless power.
It was originally built for the Commonwealth Institute of Technology before the war, but was only for testing.
Over the years we've advanced the technology, made a great many improvements, and are finally nearly ready to activate it.
The reactor is close to ready, but recent tests have determined we have a few tasks ahead of us. Thus, we come to Phase Three.
And to how you will help. Power is, as I'm sure you've seen above ground, a very valuable commodity. I'm not talking about some abstract concept of control, I mean real tangible power.
The kind that keeps the lights on. With every advance the Institute makes, our need for raw power increases.
Many compromises and sacrifices have been made over the years to allow progress to continue. It risks personnel and equipment. But no longer.
Phase Three is, simply, the activation of a nuclear reactor that can provide enough power to the Institute now and forever.
It will ensure not just our survival, but our prosperity. You'd lead the Directorate in setting policy, resolving disputes, and the like.
There's no question that some of the Directorate, and the Institute at large, will need reassurances about your appointment.
That's why I'd like you to take charge of this latest operation. Doctor Filmore can fill you in on the details. There are hard decisions ahead.
For all of us, but for you especially. I know that you'll do the right thing. Only problem is the lack of transparency.
I don't think we get the full story on everything that occurs down here. What does that have to do with why we're talking?
Sometimes I feel like Father isn't being straight with me I don't like that. But still, how can I turn my back on all of this?
I had a colleague down here Several months ago, there was an accident in his lab, and he was killed. I wanted to help with the investigation, but Father had the laboratory sealed saying that it was contaminated.
The incident never sat right with me. The more I asked about it, the more I felt like Father was deflecting my questions.
If you bring me solid information on what killed him, I'll take it as a favor from the Brotherhood, and consider your offer.
Do we have a deal? So good to have you here. Good to see you again. Did you need something? Something I can do for you?
Anything I can help you with? As the name implies, the BioScience division specializes in fields of study such as botany, genetics and medicine.
Our most important directive is to ensure the health and well-being of everyone in the Institute.
To that end, we cultivate highly specialized breeds of flora for use in food and medicine. We've even started to explore the idea of synthetic animal life.
You probably saw the gorillas You really are here. Well, all right. I'm Allie Allie Filmore. You can think of me as the Institute's Chief Engineer.
When Father told us about you, I could hardly believe it. You've been through so much, I think most people would have just given up.
If you don't mind my asking, what was it that kept you going all that time? Now, I'll give you a quick run-down of the Facilities division, and then I'll answer any questions you might have afterward.
As you might guess, we keep the Institute's mechanical and electrical systems running smoothly.
We maintain and upgrade all of the systems that make it possible to live and work in a place like this. There's a lot of machinery behind these walls that recycles the air and water and provides power to the laboratories and quarters.
The work we do might not be as exciting as some of the other departments, but it's at least as important. So, now that you're here and you've spoken to Father, does that mean you're on board?
Don't recharge unless your primary levels are below two percent. Also, if you haven't patched your navigation software, do so after this meeting.
The last thing we need is more synths bumping into walls. Alright, that's all for now. You can resume your duties. Doctor Lawrence Higgs is our mechanical engineer.
He oversees the major life support and security systems. Power distribution is Doctor Evan Watson's area of expertise, and Doctor Newton Oberly is in charge of food and housing.
He coordinates with BioScience to ensure that our meals are balanced for optimal nutrition. We also make use of a number of synth units for low-priority maintenance and labor.
You sure they don't "wander off" on purpose? This is a machine we're talking about. Can you enslave a generator, or a water purifier?
Of course not. The same principle applies. But let's get back to your mission. You are to find this missing android.
I've tracked him to somewhere here in the Capital Wasteland. He must have done something drastic, like facial surgery and a mind wipe, or else I would have found him by now.
It will be no easy task. He may not even realize he's an android. Don't upset him by talking with him. Just come get me immediately.
I'll handle it. Come on, Zimmer, what aren't you telling me? Very well. I'll tell you what you want to know, if it helps you locate my property.
The duty of this particular unit was the hunting and capturing of other escaped androids. Yes, others have escaped. It's one of the side effects of having such an advanced A.
Machines start to think for themselves. Fool themselves into believing they have rights. And so And wanted to forget those deeds.
Satisfied now? What is an android exactly? Those buckets are mere children's toys compared to the real thing.
Androids have fake skin, and blood, and are programmed to simulate human behavior, like breathing.
They can even eat and digest food realistically. It's Harkness, Rivet City's security chief! Yes, that makes sense. He used to work for a special branch of the Commonwealth Police, after all And he's right here in Rivet City!
I must wait Thank you for your discreet assistance, and continued discretion regarding this matter. And now for your payment. This combat module will directly affect your central nervous system.
I think you will find it quite beneficial. Justin Ayo, acting director of the Synth Retention Bureau. I'll be up front with you.
We're going to be keeping a close eye on you for the near future. Despite your relation to Father, you're a bit of an unknown quantity.
I'm sure you understand.

The upper three stories of the cylinder are residential and meeting rooms. The majority of the activity takes place on the bottom floor.
Along the outer circumference of the lower floor are doors leading to the Institute's four main labs: Bioscience is the lab to the northeast, Robotics is to the southeast, Synth Retention is to the southwest and Advanced Systems is to the northwest.
There are also supply rooms next to each of the labs in the lower section. Some of these are locked via terminals. At the end of the Synth Retention quest, the player will receive their own personal quarters when they return from Libertalia.
The Sole Survivor's personal quarters are found by going up the staircase past the entrance with the clock symbol. Once the third floor is reached, it is located down a small hallway on their left, right across from Evan Watson's quarters.
One of the larger labs, bioscience is filled with plants and even some synthetic gorillas. There is a series of connected labs that have been closed off and abandoned also.
The FEV lab is the source of the majority of super mutants found in the Commonwealth. It's also speculated that this was where mutant hounds were created.
To access the lab one must either hack a Master level terminal in the main Bioscience lab which provides direct access to the FEV lab.
Or, pick a Novice locked door in the back hallways of the Bioscience division which requires dealing with an assaultron guard, seven laser turrets and further hacking to open locked doors, with the option to disable some of the turrets.
Going through the storage room the Sole Survivor will enter what is a long room filled with observation cells. Past that there's a small room with a destroyed synth and another door access terminal, the destroyed synth indicates there was a conflict of some kind which left the lab in a state of disarray.
The player character will then find the main research room, with three large glass cylinders in the middle, two of which contain super mutant specimens.
The third cylinder looks to have been smashed with a chair. The rest of the room is filled with lab equipment and machinery.
One can find another terminal that is filled with test subject information and progress reports. The player character can also find the serum that Virgil asks to retrieve to cure his mutation and the holotape " Brian Virgil personal log " which explains why he left the Institute.
One can give this holotape to Madison Li to convince her to leave the Institute during the quest From Within. Robotics is the smallest of the four labs by accessible areas, consisting of a single large room containing the Institute's synth assembler.
A constant stream of synths is being produced here, being assembled in a pool in the middle before climbing out and walking through into the inaccessible Processing section.
A small lab area with multiple work stations and a firing range used to test new weaponry. This is where Institute weapons are developed, tested, and innovated to arm the Institute's vast army of synth foot soldiers and coursers.
This is also where they created the experimental synth relay grenades , which will automatically teleport in multiple synths to fight for the player where thrown.
Upon entering, there is a long sloped hallway that leads to a larger room with the reactor in the middle, accessible by a catwalk.
Depending on which faction the Sole Survivor chooses there will be a change in the events that take place here.
If the player character decides to destroy the Institute they will be greeted by three hostile laser turrets upon entering the sloped hallway.
In the main reactor room, there are multiple synths, Institute scientists , and two more laser turrets. The player character needs to plant the fusion pulse charge in the reactor to sabotage it, which leads to completely erasing the Institute off the face of the Earth with a massive nuclear explosion.
Once the agitator is planted the player character is teleported out and can not return. If the player character decides to join the Institute they will be called to the reactor room to insert the beryllium agitator into the reactor, no turrets will be hostile and the room with be filled with scientists.
By doing this the Institute will be propelled into the future with enough power to sustain them indefinitely.

Shaun was useful because he had been preserved since before the war, therefore his DNA had not been exposed to radiation.
Virtually everyone in the Commonwealth has problems with the Institute. Those who believe in synth rights, like The Railroad , are opposed to the Institute due to their enslavement of synths.
You will likely hear of the mysterious Institute as you interact with others in the Commonwealth. In this quest, you will be tasked with building a teleporter and entering the Institute.
Once inside, you will walk out of the relay room to hear a voice on the intercom system. He will invite you to come and meet with him.
You will see an elevator ahead of you which will take you to him. The elevator will stop, and you will step out to find a room with a small boy who turns out to be a synth version of Shaun.
After some dialogue with him, the mysterious Father will come in to speak with you. You will learn that he is actually Shaun and that time has passed many years since you saw him taken.
Be careful not to upset him during your conversation, as you can become hostile to the Institute through dialogue. He will offer you the chance to join the Institute although you can postpone the decision and join later.
You will be able to fast travel in and out of the Institute once you have completed this. Your first mission with the Institute will involve tracking down an escaped synth.
You will have to travel to Libertalia to meet a courser. Once you have rendezvoused with him, you will have to make your way across the hazardous pathways made from boats and scrap.
There will be many raiders along the way hiding in nooks and crannies. The target will be in the main structure in the back. To get there, make your way to the lift that is attached to the structure by cables.
Be careful when approaching the lift and riding it. One of the raiders will be launching mininukes at you. After clearing the rest of the raiders, you can talk to the rogue synth.
If you do not convince him to return to the Institute, you will have to kill him. You can now return to Father and inform him of what happened.
Afterwards, he will allow you to visit your new quarters. It will contain a bed and some storage space. There are some synths being held at the market at bunker hill.
You will have options to tip off the Brotherhood of Steel or the Railroad if you want to help them. You will arrive and meet a courser.
After speaking with him, a battle will ensue between The Brotherhood, the Railroad, Institute synths, and super mutants.
You can kill anyone while the battle is raging without any of the factions turning hostile. This is a great opportunity to take loot from the dead soldiers.
You can complete the quest by either killing the courser or finding and resetting the synths. You can kill the courser at any point as long as the battle is ongoing.
If you want to reset them, you will have to make your way into the monument from the back. There will be a hatch that will take you to the synths.
Simply reset them and return to speak with Father. He will be standing on top of the ruins of the CIT. If you killed the courser, you will have to be very careful with your dialogue.
If you admit any guilt, Father will turn against you. After this conversation, the quest will be completed. Father will request your presence at a meeting between the department heads.
Father will break the information that he is dying. After the shock of those in the room, he will then announce the sole survivor, you, as his successor.
This quest will cause you to become enemies with the Brotherhood of Steel. You will have to speak to Dr. Filmore, and then head to the relay room.
You will be teleported to the top of the mass fusion building. You will find a keycard in a room upstairs.
Afterwards, you can use the elevator to descend into the mass fusion building. As you descend, waves of Brotherhood soldiers will appear on the multiple levels of the building.
The elevator will break down about halfway to the bottom. You can repair the elevator or make your way down on foot.
Either way, you will have to fight a lot of soldiers. Once you make your way to the ground floor, there will be a door on the left side of the room that will lead to another elevator which will take you to the reactor chamber.
You will have to step into a room on the left of the control room. There will be a button for you to press which will close the doors and decontaminate you.
When the other door opens, rush up the stairs and activate the Reactor.
